sweep circles with different radii along an open curve

Hello people, I've been reading these forums for some time now, and decided to participate. I'm fairly new to Maya, but have built up some confidence working the software by now.

Yesterday, I was amazed I couldn't do a simple task, and wondered if it was Maya's limitation, or mine. Searched everywhere, and couldn't find a solution.

How do you go about sweeping circles with different radii along an open curve, to create a tube with different diameters?
Extrude surface gives a different extrusion for each circle at a constant radius.
Birail 3+ needs two rails, and in this case the only way to do it accurately is to put a single path through each circle centre.

The work around is to loft straight between radii changes, but that may not be the correct geometry for the model in question. Can you select a path for lofting? Not that I know of.

In Rhino it is fairly simple. Sweep along one rail. That's it.
Thanks, guys.
