Question Maya 2013 viewport problems (2 in total)

Hi all, let me explain by simply showing the problem:

Here, everything is normal, blue wire-frame lines and the polyplane on the right is visible


Now, when I turn the camera, some lines become red (and no, they are not in a red coloured layer). What does that mean? How can I get rid of it?

Last thing, when looking at the polyplane from the other side:

As you can see, it disappears. This is happening on all of my scene's, but I'm not used to it.

I really hope that for these situations there is a simple solution.

If you need more information, please let me know.
I'm using maya 2013 (not 2013.5) and already tried resetting settings and deleting the pref folder.
