growing a flower
Im trying to create a shot with a flower growing up a wall,
What I would ideally like to do is start it as a bulb/seed and then have the stem grow and eventually flower (ideally with little offshoots happening as it grows. Does anyone have any clever methods of achieving this sort of effect in maya? thanks! __________________

I actually made a post a few years back about the subject of making things grow(!)
![]() After watching a video on The Area: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=7&t=833178 Heres a link to Florianīs breakdown: http://vimeo.com/8015512 Maybe you can use some of those techniques. If you need help let me know ![]() |

Kyron,
I read your old thread - found it a bit hard to figure it out from the explanations given. Any chance you could explain it again for a more simple minded person ![]() __________________

i have done something similar in the past using one master animation of seed to flower and using particle instancer to grow the whole field.
in term of the master animation you can use animated extrusion on a curve, and the petals animation using blendshapes, bend deformers parented to the extrusion __________________

Iīm at work atm. And have a deadline coming up this week. Will make an example scene for you as soon as I get a bit of downtime.
Edit: I made a simple scene while rendering ![]() http://www.speedyshare.com/wkMYf/animatedLattice.rar Please ignore my terrible animation skills. If you look at the old post, Emil pretty much described the process step by step. 1. Create a cube or dummy geo thatīs big enough to cover you flower or w/e you want to grow from the top view. The Y axis dosenīt matter, only the X and Z. 2. Select both objects and create a lattice with enough divisions (the more you have the more you can deform it). 3. Select all the lattice points that covers the flower and scale them into a single point (like Emil pointed out while scaling the object, holding down J will make it easier, scale each axis one by one). If you do this correct your object should be "invisble" now, and the top/bottom of the lattice should now have an X shape. 4. In the outliner select lattice and latticebase and move them down a bit. 5. Animate the the lattice upwards. This should pretty much look like you are just animating a mask in After Effects or Nuke. Pretty boring. If you animate the rotation you get a bit of a more interesting look. 6.What I did was to also parent a bend deformer and animated that, as well as a twist deformer. If you want to animate different control points of the lattice you can select one or more lattice points, and then go to animation > create deformers > cluster. Hope this makes any sense ![]() Last edited by Kyron : 02 February 2013 at 10:44 AM. |
