Maya vs. 3d Studio Max, to create 2 characters: one Pixar-like, and another realistic

I have a graphic design background but I would like to get back into 3d animation as a hobby. It has been many years since I took an intro course in college where I learned modeling & character animation in Lightwave 3d. I wasn't a fan of Lightwave because it kept on crashing and I don't know which software package I should now, Maya or 3d Studio Max. Here are the two projects I want to work on and maybe someone out there can help me make a decision?:

1)I want to animate a Pixar-like character. I then want to take that animation and place it into an HD video where it will interact with a person, similar to how the movie "Ted" was produced.

2)I also want to create a very realistic character similar to that of the Columbia Pictures lady with some very simple animation-like clothes rippling in the wind.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Happy New Year!

You can't go wrong with either software.

In terms of pure animation, Maya is more popular. Being an animator with Maya skill will land you an easier job.

In my opinion, for modelling and shading purpose maya or max anything you can choose between. But for animation maya is far far rich than max with its advanced tools and time saving workflows. And definitely MEL, that's incredible. Pixar like or Realistic what you can say is both possible in maya or max. That is just a look development that includes lighting, texturing and shading. This job can also be done in several other software like Lightwave, Blender, Cinema 4D etc. You should choose a software which can finely fulfill your main demand. Look for other threads that sounds something like Maya vs. Max. You will find a bunch of quarrels.

Get the trials. See which one fits your personal tastes the best. I'm more fond of Maya, but many prefer 3dsmax. To each his own. Both apps are highly popular and will serve you well across many industries. Not worries there. Both have the necessary tools to allow you reproduce both styles. Both will do what you want. No worries there either. Ultimately, it boils down to the artist behind the tool. Quality is as quality does. GIGO. You get what you put in. They're just just tools. What they do is the same. HOW they do it is what really differs.
