Event horizon modelling question

I'm working on a model of the event horizon gravity drive just for fun,the main centerpiece is a large sphere with dozens of thin cylinders covering it (like a disco ball except circles not squares).
Does anyone know the best way to cover a sphere with these cylinders rather than doing it manually?

Hopefully that makes sense

Check out SOuP for Maya here. It has everything you'll need.

Also, Brave Rabbit has a nice script (a lot of them actually) here.

IMHO this is the kind of thing Softimage ICE is made for. If you have access to a copy of SI then I would use that.

I actually worked on the Event Horizon movie back in 1996 and I still have one of the Dimensional GatewayCore Panels that we used on the interior model (which I have taken a photo of below) that you can use to accurately model the gateway. I hope this helps, and I'd be interested to see how it turns out. I also added a recreated Event Horizon ship that I created earlier this year.

Thanks for amazing reply and images.I managed to get into the cinema when it came out and loved the design and amount of detail, was great on the big screen too with the camera floating around and sound booming.
