Unhappy I just can't get over object selection...

Hi everyone,

Recently made the switch from Max to Maya and I'm having trouble with a few of the most basic things... I'm mainly an animator and I'm constantly running into issues with selecting control objects on rigs.

Basically, if the rotation gizmo for one object happens to be overlapping other ones, I can't seem to select them. What I'm having to do is deselect my current object and click on the other one. I'm used to how it works in Max where one could click through the transform gizmo and select underlying object but the way it works in Maya, coupled to the fact I can't manage to assign Deselect All to a hotkey, I'm wasting so much time just trying to select my rig components properly.

I've pored over the settings and preferences but I can't seem to find an option that will enable me to 'click through' the gizmo and select other objects.

How do you guys go about it?

TLDNR: How can I select and object underlying the transform gizmo of the currently selected one.

The only ways I've found to get around this are

1 - click outside the transform gizmo and then drag in over the object to be selected.
2 - switch to the select tool with 'Q', select the controllers and then back to move/rotate ('W' or 'E').

It bugged me too at first as I also work with C4D and that allows you to select behind the gizmo like Max but I guess I got used to it after a while.

Brian's solution is pretty much what I do, but Nathan posted a variation on this idea, where you make the q hotkey a press/release thing, so it only temporarily puts you in selection mode, hiding the manipulators and letting you select something while q is being pressed, then when you release q, you are still in what ever tool you were originally. DJX: I've tried fiddling around in the hotkey editor trying to get the 'release' behaviour to work properly but I can't manage getting it to pop back into either Rotate or Translate :/

Update: I realised the TimeDraggerTool behaves in a similar way when you release the button, it seems to invoke the 'invokeLastAction' command but when I try to assign the same command to 'q Release' it goes back to the translate tool even though I was using rotate last.

Update 2: Ok, sort of working now... Except when I'm using the selection tool (hotkey invoked or otherwise) I can't select any other objects :P Anyone mind testing this out?

Alright, it's finally working. Turned out to be a problem with my WACOM tablet I use; there was some trouble registering clicks and that's what caused the conflict with the tool invokes.

In Maya the centre of the rotate gizmo is arbitrary/camera relevant rotate.

But you got it working, so this is more for anyone else that didn't figure it out yet.

Just out of interest, since google search is way better than cgtalk search, so this would be of interest to anyone that (like me) didn't know this little google trick... put "site:forums.cgsociety.org" in your google seach string... eg: I found the old thread above on the first page of results using the following search on google...

I'm not sure it's applicable or even helpful, but in Maya's preferences you can set it to pull up a list of whatever's under your selection-click, so you can then pick the object you desire. Maybe it'll be useful.

When I first had this set up, it was awesome. But because we are creatures of habit the natural instinct was to continue working the old way, even when the new hotkey assignments were still set. It took me a month to get to used it so it may take a while but stick at it.
