Hardware rendered missile trail

I am trying to create a nice RPG (missile) trail. Since it is for previs and won't be software rendered it has to look good in the Hardware render. It's important that the colors accumulate so the source of the ignition has a hotspot. I wasn't able to get color accumulation with sprites but I can with mulitpoint particles but then multipoint particles don't give me a nice soft cloud towards the end of the trail.
I feel like I have seen a tutorial about this in the past but now I can't find one.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.
