2013 tumble tool problems

hi all-

I'm having inconsistent behavior with the tumble tool not tumbling on object when in component mode. Works as expected when in object mode, but switching to any component mode reverts the camera to tumble about it's pivot point and not the object the mouse is currently under.

I've linked a video demonstrating the issue and at about 40 secs in, you'll see that momentarily the tumble tool works as expected in component mode, but then immediately goes back to the wacky behavior.

is this a bug? running maya 2013 on mac 10.8.2

http://youtu.be/LKNtxgJeX9A

thanks in advance

well seems this was a case of troubleshooting 101. Ditching the preferences folder seems to have cleared this up.
