Render layers, material overrides

Okay, so I'm on a project with a really heavy scene, it had like 10 render layers, and I had to do another version of this project. Instead of saving a new scene and update all render layers with the new stuff I just copied them to be able to quickly access all the old stuff.

Now things are starting to fall apart, aspecially shader assignments seem to get broken. Every render layer have different materials assigned to the same object. It's kind of hard to explain what happens but certain objects seem to not understand their assignment, it looks like the object get the material from another layer instead of the one it should have, but I render it renders totally invisible instead. If I assign the correct one, another layer gets broken instead.

Anyone know what's happening and am I screwed? Maya 2011

edit: nevermind, problem solved. It's 2012 and I didn't google, embarassing :/
