My References are cooked [SOLVED]

Okay, so I've come across a serious problem and don't know who else to ask - I've contacted Autodesk but am also wondering if I could pick anyone's brains here.

Basically, whenever I create a reference and place it somewhere, whenever I save then reopen the scene it'll revert back at 0,0,0 and drop all instances of this references. This happens to me know regardless of scene.

Anyone experienced anything like this before? Any ideas? I'm pretty desperate at the moment.

Is this behaviour on a fresh empty scene?

Does it occur if you don't instance the reference?

Yes

Yes

However I found a solution, I deleted prefs in particular just userPrefs.mel

This fixed the problem in the end, but I'd love to know if it was corruption or a silly settings somewhere.

I don't remember playing with any Maya settings, but hopefully if this problem ever happens to anyone in the future googling, try just deleting userPrefs.mel.
