Locator like object? maya 2012 bug?

Hello,

There is a locator shaped object at the pivot of my polygon, except it's not a locator because I have locators hidden. Also when I duplicate my mesh, the locator thing duplicates as well.

Another funny thing is that when I disable selection of surface objects, I am able to select my polygon mesh by clicking on the locator.

Has anyone encountered anything like this? Or did I accidentally enable a feature that I am unaware of?

display handle

sounds like you have 'display handle' turned on.

with the object selected. in the attribute editor under the Display drop down, uncheck display handle, and that should fix it.
