Select all your objects and make a new UV set, planar is probably quickest.
Then open your UV Editor and go Polygons>Unitize. (now all faces are 1/1 size of the UV map)
Now apply a material to all the objects and plug a Ramp node into the color/diffuse.
Set the ramp to "Box" and just make it two colors, the outer color will be your wireframe color, the inner your face color.

This method will work with the depth of field you were trying to do as well, and you can animate line widths by just keying the ramp color position.
