Mystery mesh won't render in any renderer

So, after years of Maya, it still manages to surprise me often.

I've never seen this one before, can anyone get this chair to render in any renderer? mental ray, vray and maya software all fail to render it.

I've tried re-assigning shape nodes, cleaning mesh, duplication mesh, checking visibilty flags, stripping scene of materials, lambert1 and maya, checking layers, cloning surface, triangulating surface....

I don't know what's wrong with the chair but if export it to obj, it should render well

Exporting as OBJ is a good way to get rid of whatever crap is on a mesh.
Nightshade UV Editor (script for Maya) - Extends Maya's default UV Texture Editor with additional tools.

I could only render the chair legs with VRay.

But I saw that somehow my Maxwell Renderer was activated so I used that instead.
The chair rendered just fine.

I then had a look in the .ma file and Maxwell is required.

I suppose export and import to a new scene would fix the VRay problem.

My yesterday's reply seems to take too long to appear, so I'll try again.

VRay renders only the chair legs.

Nevertheless, the full mesh displays fine with Maxwell Render.

The scene has a 'Maxwell required' line and maybe the missing parts were set up under it.
Export/re-import the scene (or remove the Maxwell line ?), should fix it.

Yes, I think that was me with the Maxwell demo installed. Thanks for the suggestion.

I ended up reimporting via obj which fixed this, but technically I'm still wondering how on earth a mesh could end up like this. No extra nodes were connected to the shape nodes etc...interesting.
