I'm not normally one to jump on the Autodesk hate bandwagon - and I was really hoping for something more in this release - but I have to say I'm more than just a little embarrassed by this.

It's a fucking joke.

Comparing the Maya improvements to what happened in Max and it's clear that - no matter what they say - they are pushing Max one way and Maya in another - and making the gap larger every day.

Did anyone actually request more 3D stereo camera crap?

Yay for point cloud stuff! who was asking for that?

I#m glad about the iRay improvements - you know what iRay is great for? product shots! you know what is also useful for product shots? fluids!

So much for the lie about biFrost being a stand alone app that pipes into Max oe Maya like Mudbox.
Especially when you look at the improvements that Mudbox continually gets - which is based on its intolerability with Maya,

I understand Max and Maya have different core users - but all Autodesk is doing is driving a wedge between those groups.

I may do a lot of arc viz and design stuff, but I also do more than that, and I want to continue to be able to do more than that. I want a fully rounded 3D animation package that exists as a competitor to Maya, not something that exists merely as a fucking drainage area for business areas Maya is behind at.

I think we all know what their direction is - they can't outright explain it to us for some magical public trading reasons but we can all see the message.

I would dearly love to go elsewhere, but I have too much invested in an Autodesk infrastructure.

Annoyed, embarrassed and betrayed.

The most important question is...

do we need new plugins or do 2014 and 2013 versions work?

An interesting release, seems solid.

I think Marius Silaghi and PJanssen should be proud that their scripts have influenced the developers at Autodesk to include features that they independently developed.

I don't work in the games industry so I'm not sure what to make of ShaderFX but I'm sure it's a welcome addition to some people.

I'm happy that they updated mental ray and iRay to the current releases but there's still no fluids in 3ds Max, I would've really liked them to include nVidia FLEX which presumably works with NVidia MassFX.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no 2015 video for Python, I'm interested to see how it's integrated and hopefully the documentation is better than it is for dotNET.

Great, the subscription advantage pack for Max 2014 is finally out!

And here I was hoping against all odds they had something more in store.
Wasn't there some talk about Open SubDiv at the last expert challenge?

Actually I consider this a serious question.

Its got to the stage that my assessment of whether a new MAX release is worthwhile isn't "is it worth the subscription cost ?" (it clearly isn't, and hasn't been for some time), but whether it is worth the download time and the hassle of having to find / wait for, the recompiles of the plug-ins I use.

Sad, but true.

there has to be more. there has to be more.

are they joking?

I kinda expected this, considering they've been switching product managers if the new guy is any good he hasn't had enough time to turn things around. It's still disappointing though, half the new features were in the Subscription Advantage Extension, and the others for the most part are not all that terribly difficult to develop as new features, it's like their development team is 10 people.

In the meantime we still have lots of features that are incomplete and lots of broken promises.

Remember that most of this was set in place long before Eddie took on his new role.

As mentioned before, Eddie came in not that long ago and a lot of things were already done. I can say that I am excited to what he is bringing to 3ds Max and a lot of users we are working with in our Charter group are just as excited.
