HELP with soft shadows... scene included.

Hi guys, a bit of help would be welcome. We'd like to figure out why we cannot get any soft shadows out of this here joined scene. (I am not the 3d artist working on this scene)

I tried to setup area lights but could only get hard edges shadows.

Deadline si coming fast, any help will be very appreciated.

Have you tried setting up a Skylight?

I am sure there are other techniques but I am working on a scene with a Skylight right now and getting some decent soft shadows with mental ray.

Just remembered something,

You will not get soft shadows if the area lights are set to render shadow-maps.

You must change the shadows to be ray-traced!

Hi Feat, thanks for the feedback. I just changed the Shadows to raytraced shadows and now get hard edges shadows from the omni lights. How can a omni light be "area" if I dont set the shadows to area shadows?

A bit confusing, isn't it.

If you haven't already done so, go to your Render Setup and in the Render panel, Shadows & Displacement, make sure "shadow maps" is turned off.

It may be faster for you to just consult the Max help because that is where I lean a lot of my stuff anyway.

Hy! Did you solved the problem with the area shadows? If not, I could help, just tell me again what is it you want to achieve: to have soft shadows from the large photometric light from above and the omni lights too, or just from the first/last?

Change omni lights to mr Area Omni. There is area light parameter rollout with Area light parameters.
For photometric light use Raytraced shadows. Shape/Area shadows rollout ->emit light from "something else as point."

I've sent your comments to my 3D guy and it's going better than yesterday. Thanks. He got better results with area_omni with mr shadow map with a high level of samples.

Here another trouble. In the hole there's supposed to have shadow as it is a closed object but it's all illuminated. Any idea what it could be?
