Having trouble with xRef in 3d Buzz Tutorial

I'm currently working on the Max Fundamentals Project 2 VTM, "Exchanging Models for Scenes 1 and 2" specifically (link here for those with a subscription).

The tutorial was using 3ds Max 8 and I'm using the latest version, Max 2014

I've created a series of animatics with basic animatic models. At this point of the project I have xRefed the animatic models in already and have gone back to those models and merged them with my final render model of the F14. When I went to the animatic and updated the xRefs of the F14 I'm having two errors:
  1. A rear elevator stabilizer is flipped
  2. I cannot access the custom attributes attached to a point helper.

Pics for reference:

I've followed the VTM very closely and cannot figure out what is wrong. I'm assuming it's because I'm using a newer version of Max.

Thanks in advance!
