Filling A Spline

lets say i create an outline of an arm with a spline line,

is there a way to just fill it with a plane or box? tried to figure that out but had no luck.

also, can someone explain nurbs/nurms, i've messed with it a bit but I wonder what benefits it has over the regular spline modeling, if any. from what i've seen its really popular, especially with maya users, so ive read thanks

You can also add the edit poly modifier if you want it flat.

If it's closed you can just convert the spline to an editable poly object. That will leave it a flat piece of polygon geometry.

I don't think anyone uses nurbs for character modeling any more. They're more used for engineering. Cars and product design and stuff like that. Subdivision surfaces are much easier to work with for characters. NURMS is a subdivision surface type. The Turbosmooth modifier is too. You won't get far with extruded splines though as subdivision surfaces work best with four sided polygons.

How do you model a character?

do you start with a box or a plane? and just extrude lines or faces?

dont be an antihero. just spill it.

Search for some tutorials using google.

Plane or box? It doesnt matter, both are possible.

Multi-segment box usually for me. Or a cylinder with 8 sides (2x2 quads on the ends). I start with the torso and extrude outward. I imagine there's loads of ways to do it, but I'm trained in sculpture so I start with a rough form and refine it.
