Attaching meshes with same bones

Is it possible to attach a rigged mesh to another rigged mesh and keep both's rigging information?
They use the exact same bones. I tried a few ways, but the rig goes crazy!

You could try using skin wrap to copy the weights off of both of the original objects onto the new combined one.

Simply duplicate the objects, attach them together, add a skin wrap, select both of the original objects as influences in the skin wrap, and then finally hit the "convert to skin" button, and it will effectively copy the weights from the two original objects to the new skin modifier on the combined object.
