You really won't need fume FX for that - it's just a nice, simple particle system with a bit of noise on the motion. You'll be able to just having a PFlow with two forces - a gravity and a wind with some turbulance blowing in one direction.

Can be done even easier in post.
http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/20...otage-tutorial/
Pick a clip that matches most, adjust color, blur, transparency and screen on the rendering.
You don't need After Effects for this, PS up from CS4 can process videos as well.

I've done similar test, just like that, but I can't find a project right now.

As previous posted, you can do it just in particle flow, but if you have FumeFX, then it will make your life easier, because with Pflow you would need a lots of particles (for spawning) and memory, and it can be really slow.

You start with the Pflow emitter that shoots the particles into an object (or attracted by object with inverted spherical wind) , and after they hit the object, you use collision with deflector, and then you use "spawn" with "speed by surface", so you make particles go in circle way over the surface.

Now, you stop here if you wanna use Fume (and spawn smoke from the last event)

Or you can continue without FumeFX, and make another particle spawn with some wind variation.

I have some free time now, and I'll try it again, and will attach here the result and Max 2011 file.

Cheers

Alright, here is the test result.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmQ9T2SK2bc

In the attachment is 3DS Max 2011 file.
Plugins needed: FumeFX, Ky Trail
Now, it's all about adjusting settings (I think it should go slower, and swirling of the smoke should be reduced)
Attached Files
File Type: zip warcraft_effects_01.zip (27.4 KB, 10 views)
