Curve editor issues with custom attributes

I don't know if i'm being stupid or whether this can't be done but is it possible to alter the tangents in the curve editor on custom attributes on an Attribute Holder?

I've got an attribute holder with a Bend Attribute which is wired to a Bend space warp which is assigned to a book, which is made of various objects - front & back cover and separate pages, just so that one controller will control the entire book animation.

Dummy(attribute holder)>Bend Spacewarp>Book

When a track in the curve editor normally doesn't have accessible tangents i normally stick a bezier float on it and it gives me the option to alter them however for this it just causes the track to disappear.

any comments and i'd be more than grateful, or i'll clear anything up if uncertain.
