Question CGtod - Advanced Photorealism in Mental Ray

Hey people,

I found this CGtod -Advanced Photorealism in Mental Ray - which is exactly what i need/want for a course.

Now it states in the requirements that if you're new to Maya this course is NOT for you.

Now for the idiot question. Can i take this course using 3DSmax..?!? It is mental ray in the end that got me interested and they work about the same.

Has anyone experienced this as a hinder?

Or is there a course for 3DSmax with the same depth as this.

Thanks,

Dennis

I imagine that it'll be so hard to follow so as it be almost entirely useless if you're doing it in Max. There will some features that are in different places and some that flat out just don't exist. Even then, I'm not sure if the menus are the same.

I've got his MR book (though I haven't used MR in some 4 years now!) and it's a good read (though very technical) - he definitely knows his stuff about Max, but if the course is in Maya, I don't think it'll help you too much. I don't have any alternative recommendations, however.

I have to disagree here Dan. Although I'm in the same boat as you - in that I havn't used MR in quite some time - I have in the past followed along with Max using MR for Maya tutorials. Everything is essentially the same. Having said that, the terminology can be different and several methods used may need small workarounds.

In short, it really depends on how raw your knowledge of MR is. If you've never used it before then look into Master Zap or Jeff Patton's Max-specific courses. If you have a grasp then you may be fine.

hmmm... thanks guys

I think i'll go for it... I'm using mental ray for years already and still need to get to gripes with it.

Why aren't you guys using MR?

Thanks,

Dennis

Personally, I've moved on to Vray.

it is a simple answer:

The formular is: Maya=mental ray and 3dsmax = Vray

Why?

Maya and mental ray have a open philosophy, you can do all what you want.

3dsmax and vray have a philosophy of handicap.

It is not a question of quality or speed. It is a question of philisophy what you need for your job.

Well, if by 'knowledge' you mean me fumbling around with settings until I get a half decent render, then I accept your bow Sir...

oh my english is not so good. sorry

i mean 3dsmax and vray will give the artist a quick and simple function to understand. The 3dsmax and vray Artist, don´t want look behind the option, they want have a finish workflow with good result.

Maya and mental ray users want the same, but we know:"we can not have all what we want". Some problems can you only fix if "you" progamming the shader. Here is the mental ray community great. It gives every time new Technics = Shaders and you can use it for your production. Vray User must wait of a new VRay Version. Mental users look on web site from the different developer and download the new Shader´s. If you know who is the developer of mental ray shaders, have you the newest technic of the market every time. No other Renderer like VRay, Final Render or what ever have this community.
