3d cartoon inviroment

greetings to all

sorry guys I'm new to this post i don't know where to start.

there is a project I'm going to start soon a 25 min project and I'm going to need your help, advices and tips.

1. i can model real things like real people, real environment and real objects, i never model 3d cartoons on cartoons environment. i just need to know how do you go around doing that.
2. do i really have to know matte painting for environment or i can use proxy's?

good bless

That's a very general question, it completely depends on what style you're looking for. It would be best to do some concept drawings to figure out what you're wanting to do. For one, cartoon typically means a cell-shaded style, but you might be thinking of a style similar to current animations today like Pixar or Dreamworks.

As for environments, a matte painting can be just a drawing that's used as the background, if that works for you then do it that way. Sometimes people do some more complicated setups with matte paintings with 3D geometry. It's usually a way to introduce a look without having to render an entire environment just for a background.
