mental ray lighting trouble

Hi, I am new to 3ds max lighting. I have been following several tutorials but no matter what I do the light always comes out looking splotchy and terrible:

What am I doing wrong?

This is caused by using nothing other than indirect illumination (such as a skylight) and using a small amount of rays.
Try increasing the rays to 500 or even 1000, and maybe try global illumination to smooth the result a bit further.

oh oh the first hurdle is hard, so many Buttons, Options, Features and Functions, but we can only help, if you have more informations. Demo-Scene as Zip File and Screen Shots from your settings can help to undestand the problem. For me looks at the Diffuse bounce of FG is 0 and not 3 or higher!?

I increased the rays and the number of fg bounces and it seems to have fixed it. Also turning on noise filtering seems like it helps too.

Thanks for the help!
