Question Edit FX max crash

I am editing FX file in use by max DirectX_Shader material

Usually it detects the changes and simply reloads

This is great for iterating ...

But recently it has started crashing when making minor changes, such as:

return float4(1, 1, 1, 1);
changes to:
return float4(1, 0, 0, 1);

and it isn't consistent ... sometimes it works, other times it doesn't

I've tried simplifying:

- isolate one model
- close material editor
- turn off macro recorder
- turn off exposure
- turn off gamma
- use a very simple effect

but I can't determine a pattern to this behaviour ... just gremlins

I can't find anything in Event Viewer or any logs ...

Any ideas? My project is stalled now ...

I've always had a lot of crashes changing shaders using ShaderFX.

Sorry that doesn't help much, but you're not the only one.

I create a maxscript button that toggles the viewport between flat and shaded modes

(In flat mode the FX file is not used)

This is 100% reliable for me:

- flat mode
- edit fx
- shaded mode
- fx is reloaded, any fx errors are displayed in material editor
