Unhappy Diamond Jewellery rendering

Hi

I am freelance developer who develops ecommerce website. I am trying to build a fashion jewellery website for myself and dabbling into rendering of models. I have spent a lot of time trying to learn 3DS Max and got quite a grip on the usage. However since I don't understand lights, reflections, ior, etc. very well (just not in my blood I guess) I am having difficulties getting the perfect rendering setup. I have downloaded the scene from http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models...iamond-2/698415 and trying to reverse engineer that. I think the metal quality is perfect. What I am not able to get is:
  1. When I do white background (change the plane colour and light colours from Halogen cool to 5400 kelvin) the metal colour changes to light grey and doesn't give the metal feel. See sample output https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bwz...dit?usp=sharing
  2. The reflections are too strong. Especially when I change the camera angle to show the ring from front. See again https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bwz...dit?usp=sharing .I need more of a studio setup with the reflections being black and white. I changed the environment HDR image but get poor results. See: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bwz...dit?usp=sharing
  3. Diamond rendering is poor. I have tried http://mentalraytips.blogspot.co.uk...amonds-and.html and also http://www.secondpicture.com/tutori...in_3ds_max.html . The problem is that they focus on rendering just diamonds but when I mix the suggested scene lights and setup with a metal ring mounted diamond, the metal rendering goes even more haywire.

I have already spent weeks trying to work this out and think I am going to give up and be a bit shameful and ask for hand holding. My ideal rendering would be something like: http://www.stevenstone.co.uk/ring-d...php?setting=456 . The guy who did it has put up the features he used but I can't get to get the perefct results from them. See: http://lee-hodges.co.uk/portfolio/3d-art/steven-stone . He is too busy to help me out.

Incentive: Whoever can hand hold me through this completely and can help me achieve similar or better results than stevenstone.co.uk/ring-display.php?setting=456 will get a crate of beer of their choice delivered to their home. Hmmmmmm..Beeerrrr.. Or if someone is willing to do the whole scene for me, including materials, lights, camera, and send it to me, please contact me via PM and maybe we can fix up a monetary rate for it, like a freelancing project? I don't want to use V-Ray since I can't afford to pay more for it anymore. 3DS Max is expensive in itself. So Mental Ray rendering it is for me.

I'm sorry I can't give you a detailed reply right now as I'm at work, but if you have the resources and you're only doing static product renderings, you may want to check out KeyShot.

http://www.keyshot.com/

It will give you very quick, nicely lit realistic renders and comes with a huge library of materials. Maybe check out a trial of it if you get time!

Hi

Dispersion with mental ray in 3dsmax is not easy. You can try Photo Studio V5. This tool can rendering 3 Color Band or 6 Color Band dispersion.

Workflow is:
- use ray depth 20 max, reflection 10, refraction 10
- create a solid glas material with ior 2.44 and use it as Diamond Material
- set the option " skip inside reflection/refraction .... " to off
- start Photostudio and activate dispersion
- select the diamond material for the script
- select 3band or 6band dispersion
- klick on render button

For example, if you use 3 Color Band, render the PS three Images ( Red + Green + Blue) and added it to the final image. Donīt save Photon Map and FG Map.

look at my hompe page: http://www.infinity-vision.de/

Render in passes, adjust strength and color of reflections in post.

"Unbiased" renderers such as Maxwell, Octane, Lux, Fry, ect. are well suited for this type of work. IMO Maxwell pretty much has the market as far as jewelry goes, not to say that there aren't others, I haven't seen any comparable renders.

Vs.:

Examples:
Maxwell - http://www.maxwellrender.com/index....llery/images/7/

Fry - http://www.randomcontrol.com/gallery-design

Indigo - http://www.indigorenderer.com/image-galleries/jewelry

EDIT: ooops, I just noticed you were committed to Mental Ray, well anyway at least for your reference.

1. Is there a demo?
2. Can I use it on an animation, like a 360 degree product turn (using AutoKey)
3. Will it work when I have to send it to a render farm?

In my original post I wrote I already tried it. The problem is maybe that I don't understand Zap's lights setup too well so I can't replicate the same thing he has.

The reason I am committed is because the Lee Hodges guy who did the original work specifically wrote in his page that the company was originally using Maxwell but later shifted to Mental Ray for better rendering.

I know jewellery rendering is a commonly asked question around here and I wouldn't be the one to simply ask a community without first thoroughly researching and spending a lot of time on trying it mself. Is there no1 available for hand holding or even to take up a small freelancing work? Do you guys where / whose door can I knock to help me out? I am running out of time now.

Hi

Yes it give a demo version online and it works in Network. This Workflow + my tool works only for stills. I must programming this for the fututre. I can only say, if you want dispersion in animations, use VRay or Final Render, fast and good results.

Don't forget to give iray a try! It has dispertion, caustics etc all with a single click of a button, a while ago I made this test:

You are talking ancient history in render years, that was before even Maxwell 2.0 (2.7 is current), Vray 2.0 (2.4), and finalRender 3.0 (3.5) were released or even as Jonathan mentioned iRay. 2010 might as well be 10 years ago. Don't discount anything new, all things render (and 3d) change rapidly, unlike car fuel economy. Just sayin'

You can also use the shader Prism Photon 1.0.0 by Ralf Habe.
