Intentional Grainy Shadows

I'm fairly new to 3dsMax. I'm working on an animated short, my render approach is not full blown realism, but a more low key look. An important part of this low-key look are the shadows. I've grown to like the grainy look of the preview soft shadows, and am looking for a way to use this aesthetic.

As I understand it now, the grain is created due to a lack of shadow rays. Adding more rays should even out the shadows eventually.

My question therefore is:

Is there a way to animate the grain seen in low quality soft shadows?
The grain now appears to be almost like an overlay, if the camera moves, the grain gradient stays static.

I'll try to add some preview screens to clarify...

If you switch between them, you can see what I mean.
