The biased renders build on the same technology.
MR:Final Gather = VR: Irradiance Map = FR:Hyper GI
MR: Irradiance particles = VR:Light Cache = FR: Harmonics GI
So if you understand how one thing work in one render you can do the same in other, if base technology the same.

Then I should open a new thread on the Plugins & Add-ons forums section of Max, since publishing that stuff here would be a little off-topic. Also, there are no quick tricks for that, and it takes some explanation and examples. Anyway, maybe you would like to check the book I was talking about: "Mastering mental ray: Rendering Techniques for 3D and CAD Professionals" by Jennifer O'Connor. It is a must for people who do architecture and design. And I also have found a good use for animation too.
Really? I had guessed so, but was not sure. That's cool. Valuable knowledge.
Anyway, still there is a great chance that one of them is faster at certain task.

We're a max-house, we use Maya for certain modelling jobs, handling CAD data and very occasionally Fx work, but for the most part we use 3dsmax with VRay.
