controlling modifier animation with object position

I'm not even sure if this is possible, but it seems like it should be.

I have an object with a bend modifier on it which goes from -20 to 20 and back again, and loops. I want to be able to control the playback speed of this with the position of a dummy - like the faster I move the dummy, the faster the modifier scrubs through the animation, and if the dummy stops - the playback stops.
Ideally i'd like this real time in the viewport too.

It seems like I need to be able to group up the animation i've already got on the object and have a controller linked to the dummy x/y position. something with wire parameters? Can you even layer animation like this? I dont know, i'm just guessing. An hour of fiddling and searching has got me nowhere.

Point cache wont work for this - it's going to be part of a rigged object, although the rig is very simple.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help

Ok, I've applied an ease curve to the bend amount and this is giving me another controller with which I can control the playback speed... but now i'm trying to use parameter wiring to link this to a dummy position and i'm not getting anywhere, it's not doing anything.
