Help? - Ferrofluid

I need to make a project which includes a ferofluid animation.
Now, I tried using blobmesh (metaballs). But the results aren't that pretty...
It looks OK on a flat surface. It looks OK as a ball. It looks OK when morphing. But it doesn't look OK on a cone! (the cone's are basically the most important part of a magnetized ferrofluid).

Actual ferofluid image:

My ferrofluid cone with blobmesh (chrome mat):

Without material:

Now I tried decreasing coarseness, but that only increases the render time... these images were made with a cone of vertexes which are 1 unit apart, blobmesh settings are size:4, coarseness:1,0

I need the size of 4 and the coarseness doesn't improve the mesh look much and takes away a lot of render time.

Am I approaching this wrong? Is there a better way for me to do this?
Now I know there are liquid control plug-ins, but I really don't have the money for them, so I need a solution that is free.

Thanks in advance.
