Question ocean and large tube wave 3ds max

Hi All,
I need to create and animate an ocean in 3ds max and would like some advice.
It starts off relatively calm with heavy rain rippling the surface, then becomes choppy and a very large wave wipes across. The camera will zoom into the "barrel" or "tube" of the wave. There are no 3d objects such as ships etc for the waves to interact with.
Just wondering wether to use plugins or just use max.
I have read about Houdini Ocean toolkit and Dreamscape plugins. Also thought about RealFlow.
thanks in advance for any wisdom shared

well I've found 3 techniques that look promising
this one is just using 3ds max
http://www.3d-palace.com/xenomorphi...ion/doc_psw.htm

this one uses Houdini Ocean Kit for 3ds max
http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/au...-houdini-ocean/

and a post on cg talk describes using progressive morph targets and looks the most detailed
http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive...p/t-622072.html

I think I'll try them all
