I've made a very basic gun really quickly just for this tutorial (again: I said 'quickly', so it looks nothing like a gun =P)
After selecting all objects, this is the default UV: Link.
As you can see, it's a mess.
I will unwrap now unwrap each object individually (gun base, barrel, trigger).
I've unwrapped the gun: Link.
Now, I'll move it off to the side (not strictly necessary if you're following this tutorial exactly, but if you're packing the UVs by hand, it'll help. A lot]. Link.
Now I unwrap and move off to the side the barrel and trigger.
Now that all my unwrapping is done, I will select all objects and apply a UVW Unwrap modifier. This is what the UV layout looks like: Link.
If you open the UV mapping, you'll see that all the objects are off the unit square but packed together in their own order.
At this point, you can tweak the UVs yourself, or just automatically pack them like this: Link.
