Rendering each light as a separate pass

How can I render each light in my scene as a separate pass?

I know how to render a lighting pass for lighting but being able to render out an individual pass for each light would be very helpful.

Depends on the renderer. Not sure about mental ray, but in vray it's called VrayLightSelect and it's a render element. Make one for each light source or groups of light sources.

I actually just tried this. It takes longer to set up than a normal render, but in the long run it saves time by not having to re-render to tweak the lights.

I use mental ray. I turned off all lights and light sources (self illumination, mrsun & sky, mr Sky Portals). Then, turn on the lights you want in your light pass, render, and save as a 32bit EXR. There's your light pass. Do this for each light pass you want to make. In Photoshop, I did a File/Scripts/Load Files into Stack... to open all the passes as layers in one file. Change the blend mode of each layer to Linear Dodge (Add). Now you can add an Exposure adjustment layer to each light pass to control the intensity, or a Photo Filter adjustment layer to adjust the color temperature of the light.

I would love to hear of a more automated way of doing these in mental ray. Perhaps I should investigate State Sets during the holiday lull here.

Thanks guys, I failed to mention I'm using mental ray at the moment.

Nauticus: thanks for the explanation, that makes sense to me. I too had intended to learn what state sets are over the holidays but haven't quite got around to it.
