photometric light passes through other objects???

Could you please help me. I am quite new to 3ds max. I am using mental ray and photometric lights. I have got a problem with the lights. They somehow go through other objects. I have attached one image with my problem.

Does anyone know how to make the light stay inside the box and make it go through the open area not all over around?

Thanks a lot.

I'd check to see if shadows are turned on in your lights. usually by default they are set to 'off'.

Hi kcayton; interesting. My problem was similar, I have a proboolean martini olive, made from two capsules, one subtracted from the other. But because I didn't want the olive to cast shadows on my background, I turned Cast Shadows off in its properties. But then the light passed right through the outside of the olive, and illuminated the inside, so the interior was actually brighter than the exterior. I couldn't figure it out, until I remembered this thread.

However, I'm curious if there's some way to avoid the light passing through, without turning on Cast Shadows. I tried cloning the olive, shrinking the clone slightly, turning on Cast Shadows in the clone only, and using it as some sort of internal light block, but unfortunately, the inner olive still casts a shadow on my background (even though it's inside another olive).

If there are any other ways to block the light passage on an object without turning Cast Shadows on, I'd love to hear it.
