Starting to learn 3DS

It's a subject i took in college, I usually study and watch tutorials on my own but this time it's kinda complicated right since it's a different environment than what i'm usually comfortable with which is Adobe Photoshop and Flash.

My concerns
-Where should i start?
-What tools should i focus more on (Ones that are mostly used).

I'm planning on making a model before my professor tells us to make one, I'm planning on making an easy one the character i'm planning to make is Link from Wind Waker.

Before i search for tutorials and tinker on my own.
-What part should i start with?
-How do i manipulate the objects to form the shapes of the body.
-How do i import images to put it in my model?
