Rigging a crane - looking for solution

Hiya! I am running into a bit of an issue with my crane rig. Here is the rig.

I am trying to get the Dolly control to follow the slight angle of the jig (horizontal part)

What I have tried:
A) I have tried to parent the Dolly Control (DC) to the Dolly Parent. This works OK even though I have to align the Parents orientation to the DC to make it work. The DC moves on the parents local XZ axis as expected. When I uncheck Inherit Z in the Heirarchy/Link panel, the DC *only moves on the world X which leaves it slightly lower than the jig by the end of the animation. It seems that by unlinking the Z, the child can't follow its own local X.

B) Path constrain DC to spline and wire to X of Parent: This method works but I have to specify X_Position*.000389 in the wiring params. Seems hacky.

What is the best way to get the Dolly to move along it's local X and Y without following it's parents Z?
