Yes , it's the same. And it would work for standard materials, but the scene uses a custom Material plugin ( see above links ), and those to not survive a conversion process....

It would work when that material plugin would expose everything to maxscript AND most important, the plugin would be available for the target Max version. Don't know about the first, but the second is a NO - so that one is a total showstopper ...
