Merge Object & Re-Link?

MAX2010_64

I thought this was already possible in a merge but must be mistaken.

Let's say you have an object called ObjectA with a bunch of other objects linked in a hierarchy to ObjectA.

In a different MAX file, you change the animation that is on ObjectA and now you want to put this newly changed ObjectA into the other MAX file but retain all hierarchical linking to the ObjectA object.

When I use Merge to simply merge in ObjectA... it gives me a dialog about duplicate object names but nothing else and the new ObjectA is brought in but all the other objects are NOT linked to this new ObjectA and I have to re-link everything to get things back to the way they were.

I could have sworn that Merge offered to re-linked objects properly in the past but it's not doing it this time.

Is there a particular method for doing this?

Thanks!

I think it's only giving you this option if you merge child objects which were linked to an object with the same name in the new file, not a parent.

Marcin is correct. The relink option pertains to relinking children to a parent that already exists in the scene.

So if ObjectA was animated in FileA and linked to ParentA. Then you merged ObjectA into FileB, which already had ParentA. It would give you the option to relink ObjectA (and any hierarchy merged) back to ParentA.

Thanks for the info. Would be nice if parent objects could be replaced without disturbing the established hierarchy.

Perhaps the 'Save & Load Animation' function is what I need... I basically just need to replace the animation on some objects without disturbing the heirarchy.

Thanks again.
