vray displacement problem

Anyone seen this before? I'm getting what looks like contour lines from my displacement on a sphere. Its a smoke map driving it, so procedural:

Are you using a displacement map or is it a procedural map?

Looks like stepping caused by using an 8bit source...

Either use a 32bit bitmap or a floating point as source for displacement.

It looks like you might be using max's smoke procedural map as a source? I think that one is only 8bits.

Ah yes, that's it. The smoke map is 8bit. Thanks for your help!

don't suppose you know a procedural generator?

I never understood why the smoke map is only 8bit (and only 2D aswel) ...

Try Bercon maps. They are pretty awesome and free
