OpenSubdiv in Blender - first demo

A first demo, and it already looks very, very promising. From 2.6fps to 30fps opengl playback rate for character animation in Blender.

Check out the video demonstration of the first implementation here:

Also, this is a non-optimized version according to the developer (Sergey Sharybin), so further speed-ups are to be expected!

BTW! Gooseberry still needs supporters to make the first open animated feature film part of film history - spread the word! Only one day left...

I don't think Gooseberry funding campaign has been made on realistic expectations so I would not worry if goals are not met. Opensubdiv is a step in the right direction though, not only for animation and texturing but for hard surface modelling since Blender modelling options are somewhat limited and subdivision is the Blender modelling workhorse. I hope lessons are learned.

There is already an official statement that Gooseberry is cancelled, at least for now, and a substitute project will be started instead:

Just curious, does somebody know how the Open subdiv gets implemented? As a modifier again? Or will there finally be partial sds possible?

Looking good indeed, especially since it is not even optimised yet. Add to that the upcoming viewport overhaul and general depsgraph improvements and we have a recipe for good times ahead

And alas, it is bad news about Gooseberry, but I could see this coming a mile away. Pity they don't just do another short and not a "pilot".

New demo showcasing a 200 times performance jump for Sintel's dragon flight animation.

From 0.2 fps to 40fps in CUDA accelerated OpenSubDiv! Amazing.
