MODO Steam Edition - Available December 2013

Do we have any DOTA2 players on CGTalk? I noticed that there's a MODO Steam Edition that only exports data for the Source engine coming out later this month: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244290/ (no pricing info available yet)
MODO Steam Edition Includes Features For:
  • Polygon Modeling
  • Subdivision Surface Modeling
  • Sculpting
  • UV Editing
  • Texture Baking
  • Materials Setup
  • Material Painting
  • Export to DOTA 2
  • Save and Load from Steam Cloud

what's DOTA2 stand for?

other than that this looks like the foundry's response to autodesk releasing Maya LT

doesn't list any other export option other than DOTA 2...so?...no fbx, obj, 3ds or lwo exports?

DOTA 2 stands for Defense of the Ancients 2. It's the most played game on Steam and the direct competitor to Riot Games' League of Legends. Here's the DOTA 2 trailer:

Yeah, the export is limited to DOTA 2, which uses Valve's Source engine, so maybe someday the Foundry and Valve will open up the export to all Source-based games, but that is wishful thinking on my part.

looks like the foundry put the wrong discount on it...as it's now changed to 20% off not the original 40% off.

150$ for something that can only export to DOTA? :s

Old 12 December 2013   #7
Millions of people play dota perhaps even 10's of millions I wouldn't be surprised if they expand this for other valve games..

Their target audience isn't professional 3D artists it's the hobbiest..

apparently it also exports to FBX for non commercial use

luxology/the foundry could really do with making a comparison chart for modo steam VS modo 701

the renderer is only for baking out maps...
however the pre view renderer will render the scene in the viewport...not sure what limitations it has however

Is DOTA export non commercial as well or can you sell it on marketplace?

dota2 is for commercial i believe...still waiting for the foundry to confim that fbx is actually an export option...

also whilst we're here what apps can convert doto2 to other formats such as obj?

from steam forums on Modo Steam edition:

What is MODO Steam Edition?
MODO Steam Edition is a simplified version of MODO with a reduced feature set that includes modeling, UVs, texture baking, materials, painting and an easy to use direct export straight into DOTA 2.

Dynamics, animation, rendering, layout, python scripting, 3rd party plugins and kits are not supported.

Purposely built for the STEAM community, MODO Steam delivers a complete content creation solution for the Source engine games.

MODO Steam Edition contains a reduced feature set than full MODO:
- modeling, scuplting, UV editing, texture baking, materials and painting
- custom lxo-like file format (.blx)
- we intend to update full MODO to have the ability to load .blx files
- MODO native .lxo files can be loaded in MODO Steam
- Direct export to Dota2 and the Steam Cloud
- export to FBX (7k poly limit)
- import OBJ, 3ds, FBX, lwo2, lwob, geo (all unrestricted in poly count)

Items from the system menus that were removed:
- Dynamics menu
- Animation menu
- Render menu, rendering for the purposes of texture creation are under a Bake menu
- Layout menu
- Command eval options in the system menu.
- Python script options in the system menu (prevent running of python scripts).
- Plugin management from the system menu.
- Kit management options from the system menu.
- Check for updates is removed, this is managed via steam.

Other items that were removed:
- No command history panel
- No form editor
- No Render panel and hotkeys.
- No layout panel and hotkeys.
- No Setup panel and hotkeys.
- No Animation panel and hotkeys.
- Updated preferences panel, to bring in line with new functionality.
- Trimmed list of presets

For all intents and purposes of creating game models and texturing them MODO Steam Edition contains the same or similar functionality as full MODO proper.

Yes very much. Or at least that's what I was orignally hoping and thinking.

I was quite interested in looking into it for learning modo and messing about with Unity, but this:

"- export to FBX (7k poly limit)"

stops it being useful for me personally. I don't have any interest in DOTA at all but that's a very low export limit. The 25k poly limit in Maya LT seemed ok to me. You can export most things with that sort of limit, but 7k is really low. Maybe that's fine for the little models in DOTA, but not for much else. Is it truly ONLY supposed to be used for a single game? That seems very odd and limiting.

Also these would be a bit of a worry:

"- No command history panel
- No form editor"

So does that prevent ANY customisation? I customise all my programs to my liking. The defaults aren't going to be how I like to do things. The extensive customisation and editable tools was one of the things I was hoping to try out about modo.

"- No layout panel and hotkeys.
- No Setup panel and hotkeys.
- No Animation panel and hotkeys."

So no animation either then?

And only usable for non-commercial work is also very limiting. That also stops it being much use for Unity.

I was interested, but now I guess I'll wait and see how things develop. As it stands it's more of a 100 personal learning edition than a useful tool.

Well... That was probably the idea. If you want a useful tool, then buy modo 701. Otherwise, enjoy making dota models with your personal learning edition.

I agree with the consensus here that it seems to be too crippled to be useful for the cost. No animation or layout customization. Very low poly limit.

I actually love modo. I come from xsi and made the switch about two years ago. I haven't needed an autodesk product since. As an instructor I've been trying to get the school to make a switch. I thought this might be a good option. Its really tough to beat autodesks student program.
I think lux/foundry need to either open up more functionality, or decrease it to hobbyist pricing.
