Cinefex Classic Collection for iPad. (Kickstarter)

Cinefex Classic Collection for iPad.

Quote: What We Are Doing

We wanted to bring new life to this archive of VFX film history, so we are licensing over thirty years worth of the most rare and costly issues of Cinefex to bring it to your iPad—every back issue from issue 1 with behind-the-scenes coverage of Star Trek and Alien, to issue 126 featuring Thor and X-Men. (Dozens of these have been sold out for years or decades — we conservatively calculated the cost to acquire the entire collection in print at $2500 today, based on the latest eBay auctions!)

Cool but almost a quarter of a million dollars to develop this seems too much IMHO.

Only for iPad ? how stupid! if something like this should be republished it should be for everyone and not just for one specific device and platform.

I'm not prone to shill out products and services on here, but I'll make an exception in this case. I've bought the last several issues of Cinefex through their iPad app and they are pretty awesome. They're $5 instead of the $13 store price and include hotlinks to larger resolution images and many of the images hyperlink to videos showing the VFX shot breakdowns. Plus, Cinefex is almost always out of stock within a few days of release in my area.

In the case of this Kickstarter, if they can put the same level of effort into the older issues as they have the new ones then I am very interested.

Its quite surprising that companies are still doing this considering the number of people who use android and win 8 tablets.

I understand the problem of targeting specific android devices but why not flagship products like nexus 7 or 10?

Among other things android devices don't have standardized resolutions like apple. Every device is different story, you can go through process of creating tons of different versions but it costs a lot.

It might cost more to develop, yes, due to fragmentation. But also revenue for Android App sales is still a fraction of iOS App sales at the moment. Piracy is also apparently much higher on Android. This could likely be decisive factors for developers.

Anyway, let's hope this thing gets off the ground and does well. If it does, it's much more likely to see an Android port.

Really, it costs that much to port an existing zine?

Like LuckyBug says, supporting all the different Android resolutions and hardware capabilities, paired with the mess that is the Android version fragmentation, makes it very expensive to develop a feature-rich app like the current app for iOS.

We are looking in to alternative publishing formats, but it's likely that features such as Retina+ resolution graphics and full article offline search would not be available.

Would you want to lose the ability to offline search in the entire article database even without any issues downloaded? Or what about high-resolution images?

If we did ae-book, you would be able to do search, but only if you have that entire book on the device. And you'd lose the curated search where we have tagged every movie title, person and company in every article, so searching for "ILM" would return every mention of the word "film."

And if all 126 back issues with high-res photos were in one "book" to allow search, it would clock in at just under 10 GB (the final size is just an estimate as we are still scanning) which wouldn't fit on Kindle hardware.

We'd love to offer this, if we can come up with a good solution, trust me!

Cinefx for android ?

Hi everyone,

I'm crazy about cinefex. I'm French, i'm working in visual effect and it's thank this Guide ! When I heard that they wanted to convert the old cinefex on digital, I was happy...but less when I knew that was on Ipad only.

I wrote to kickstarter's team :

Hi Cyril, thanks so much for your comment about our project.

At this time there are no current plans to bring Cinefex for iPad to another platform, or to distribute the magazine content elsewhere. The iPad is our target platform because it offers the best combination of features and installed base among the likely readership of Cinefex. We've even heard from people that they plan to acquire an iPad just to get this collection!

Thanks again for contacting us!

Warm regards,

The Team at New Scribbler

I'm not that everybody will buy an Ipad...So I created a survey. Maybe we'll change their idea ;-)

thank you, Cyril
