WSJ:How Neill Blomkamp Created Two Worlds in ‘Elysium’

Quote:

"In his new film, “Elysium,” writer-director Neill Blomkamp explores a divided humanity in the year 2154: Earth is overpopulated and crumbling, and the skyscrapers of future L.A. look like they’re about to topple over with the weight of poverty.

Elysium, on the other hand, is paradise in perpetual rotation – you will not get sick, die young, or want for anything.

To achieve the dual worlds, Blomkamp focused on the broad strokes, but also, the details. Everything from the brands he shuttles into the future (Bugatti for Elysium, Nissan for Earth) to the look of weapons (high-tech for Elysium, guerrilla for Earth).

“Elysium” will be released on Aug. 9. In this third and final part of the Journal’s interview with Blomkamp, he discusses the film’s two settings, how he used computer graphics, and the challenges of imagining Elysium. (Read part one and part two here.)"

I was going to put in a sarcastic comment here about how he created two worlds by paying a lot of talented and skillful people a large amount of money. Or that he created two worlds by hiring some good concept artists and art directors...

But maybe that's unfair to him. He's got that whole 'one-of-us' thing going for him

Hmm-Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen aka "people's car" today.
Thats kinda ironic with his world shuttlin's 'historical context'...
Its hard to avoid when everybody is owned by somebody else these days.
