Terragen 3 Professional announced

Planetside Software today announced the introduction of Terragen 3 Professional, a new product focused on the needs of visual effects production for film and broadcast, game asset development, architectural visualization, and commercial print.

Developed with direct feedback from visual effects vendors using Terragen in major film and TV projects, Terragen 3 Professional includes many new features and performance enhancements to meet the needs of deadline-driven projects. A Linux render node will also be available making integration with existing Linux render farms possible for the first time.

Feature Highlights:
  • Comprehensive layer and render element output
  • Enhanced 3D preview
  • New ultra fast, high detail Global Illumination mode
  • Significantly improved population control including per-instance editing and color variation
  • Support for FBX and other industry-standard data interchange formats
  • Significant performance enhancements for localized cloud rendering
  • Object mesh deformation
  • Content library for organizing and quickly accessing scene files, objects, and textures
  • Enhanced DEM format and georeferencing support
  • New spherical camera
  • Depth of Field blur
  • Linux render node

Current Terragen licensees include include Digital Domain, Prime Focus, Lola Post, ILM, and many more. You can see Terragen work from several of these studios in Oblivion, coming up this weekend in theaters in Man of Steel, as well as in Elysium later in the year. Many of the Terragen shots in these films have been produced with the benefit of Terragen 3 Professional features in alpha testing.

Fantastic, finally! The feature list is exactly what would have been my wishlist for TG2. Can't wait!

Will there be a win/mac render node as well? Are you also adding some kind of render job management?

Very glad to hear the feature list is looking good for your needs. There may yet be a few surprises too.

You can already render from the command line on Mac and Win. A separate render node may be available in a future point release for Terragen 3, but probably not at initial release. Native render job management is something we're considering for the future, but will not be a part of the initial TG3 release.

EXR and spherical camera! So TG at last has one-shot light-probe generation?

I tried getting environment maps out of TG2 once, found it to be a complete pain in the ass to get it to work right.

Now all that, passes, importing objects as FBX? Dammnnnn. I just hope the price is in line with the past TG releases. As long as it doesn't suddenly shoot up into 4 digits, I think I'm sold.

I think my favourite new feature is the VASTLY expanded "Render elements". Pretty much any aspect of a scene can be easily rendered out as a separate layer. Very powerful for post work, tweaking and integration with other apps and work-flow.
