joystick:EA lays off 900 employees worldwide in 'organizational restructuring'

Quote:
"During a conference call discussing its year-end financials yesterday, Electronic Arts revealed that it laid off approximately 900 employees worldwide as part of an "organizational restructuring" initiative.

Emphasizing that its business was in a period of transition due to the coming launch of next-generation consoles, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen announced company-wide plans to "reduce [its] overall headcount by approximately 10 percent," in an attempt to reduce costs. EA employed an estimated 9,000 workers across its studios, according to its last official employee count in March of 2012.

The latest round of layoffs cost EA $16 million in severance payments.

I thoroughly disliked EA as soon as I discovered playing a game from them mean installing origin to download the game I had cds for. Also there is the news that EA gets to do Disney's next Star Wars games. http://news.softpedia.com/news/EA-s...14-351894.shtml

I expect both EA and Activision to purge more jobs even as a new generation of consoles enter the market - both companies are having to come to terms with Free to Play and advances in the mobile game markets. Activision/Blizzard lost 1.3 million players in 3 months and stated declines to continue. EA's Peter Moore has already stated that the Free to Play model is an inevitability will be emphasized in more titles. Free to Play represents a significant cost effect to developing titles.

The two juggernauts are having to adjust to major shifts in the market place and will have to budget accordingly. The past couple of years has seen scores of publishers and developers go under I can't imagine what the game development market will look like in 2015.

The solution is subscription games: $59.98 per month. If you don't pay for the next month, you lose the right to play the game.

Could be in ten years EA is talked about like SGI. Missed the boat, couldn't swim, eaten by shark, digested to the bottom the ocean never to be seen again. Wouldn't that be a shame

It may take less than 10 years with the current trends in gaming, but Disney has signed a licensing deal with EA to produce their Star Wars titles.

I seriously doubt EA will be going anywhere in the next 10 years.
