"..........broadcasters are commissioning less high end vfx driven drama series this year, with Merlin discontinued and the BBC not commissioning a Doctor Who series this year."

Bad news for Doctor Who fans, no new series this year.

Sad to hear. Still, would be interesting if this trend resulted in more budget conscious productions using more practical effects.

This industry sucks doesn't it.

If we laid out all the crappy things that's happend in the past few years and they way artists are treated, there is no way that people would want to get into it.

Are they not doing a series this year or are they just doing several specials for the 50th anniversary this year?

To bring this "off topic" topic to its conclusion (hopefully):
The second part of the current season (8 episodes IIRC) starts tomorrow night at BBC One.
So they probably won't be starting the NEXT season this year.

Whats to say they wont do it in house instead? Being a tax funded organisation they could stand to get better value by training up talent and staff...

They've tried that before, and it almost always works out cheaper for them to send the work out to bid, as the bidding system is so skewed in their favour. In the same way the hollywood studios have a huge amount of leverage in vfx features, the beeb have many, many studios competing for the work they commision because they're so dominant in british tv.
