funky stuff. Hope Max is getting some of those APEX particles. |

Hmm, kinda cool, definitely over-the-top in that demo. Large chunky swirly particles IMO = distracting not complimentary. The Turb Fields seems pretty one off though, those turbulence fields look pretty much like what can be done with a standard Wind Spacewarp, I understand it is an in-game feature. Also note Fields manipulation is cool as long as you can use more than 65k particles... which seems to be this crazy PhysX limitation, at least in max.
The destruction particles same thing adds a nice touch it not crazy overdone. Not to knock too hard, it has potential, for max though, some other PhysX/Apex dynamics features currently need more attention. I figure by the time I retire software may be actually cool enough ![]() __________________

sure, but not in real time. I just want anything that can speed up the slowness that is Particle flow. |

While I agree that Particle Flow could be faster, it is not that slow.
Who is to say that Apex would be real-time in max? MassFX nor PF Tools Box#2 PhysX can play more than a couple thousand simple shape particles near real-time if your lucky. Count yourself blessed if you can even get to use the limit of 65k before you grow old and grey from waiting or avoiding app lockups. Don't get me wrong I like PhysX it does some things pretty good but it is what it is and that is a game based physics engine. I had real big hopes the version 3.0 SDK would really bring up the bar, I have yet to see those hopes IMO it does "ok" in the fx world, until they figure some things out it is difficult to do anything really serious with it. __________________

PhysX effects are nice eye candy but they can clutter an already busy scene lending a disadvantage with a chance to obscure enemies. I've played Borderlands 2 with PhysX maxed and found some of the effects did just that on certain levels.

Agreed Richcz. I think it can add a nice polish to the game but looks like they turned it to 11 judging from that video. They need to tone it down considerably. It is like a "Particle Emitters Gone Wild!" video.

From the looks of it, they turned it up to 12. O_o __________________

As long a the particles don't integrate well into the surroundings (and in the Hawken video they definitely don't - no shadows from the particles / energy particles just disappear into the ground / etc.), it just looks cheap.

Hawken is one of many free-to-play games where you start off as a level 0 character, and get mowed down again, and again, and again by players who are level 15 - 25.
Basically, if you don't buy things with real money in the game, you are no more than moving cannon-fodder for more experienced players. I also don't like the level design in Hawken. There is a lot - other than particle effects - that is needed to improve this game. As it stands - starting as a level 0 player - you are nothing but easy cannon fodder for paying gamers to shoot at. Meh! ![]() |

Yea welcome to free to play games. Planetside 2 is the only f2p game I played in which you are effective straight out of the gate with starter infantry weapons.

Man it would be so nice seeing anything usefull done with PhysX instead of just that i could have done without. It feels kinda frustrating, we have the ability to do crazy real physics stuff by hardware powered PhysX...weren't they talking about 60.000 elements interact? Whole bridges collapsing? too bad with just Nvidia supported iam not impressed with what they are doing right now (even as an Nvidia user). If i was to choose a physics engine i would probably rather go with Bullet and avoid the Bandwagon that is Physx.

Yeah Autodesk not bundling Bullet with Max is mind boggling stupidity.

We can switch topic and say what is and what could be but not really what this about. The thing is it doesn't matter what you get, the thing that matters is constant development and improvement. The latest and greatest is nothing if something else comes along and everyone switches focus to that. In the case of reactor, for example, it was quite good and pretty solid, the problem was it pretty much saw no further "real" development.
You can get bullet in max currently in TP, soon in Rayfire, as well as dev your own. it too is based on game physics. __________________
