Mari 1.6 now out with added flow, glow and AMD

To round the year off nicely we've just shipped Mari 1.6.

More info is available here

This is a great release that adds AMD support, emissive shading and a flow map painting tool kit to all the other Mari goodies.

We've been working really hard with AMD to make this happen, so big thanks to them. We've added officially tested support for the following AMD cards

Radeon HD 7850, HD 7950 and FirePro W7000, W8000 and W9000.

You'll need to have the latest drivers installed.

Here is a quick video showing the new features

As always I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

There is a 15 day trial on our website and this upgrade (as usual) is available to everyone with current maintenance.

If you're quick you can take advantage of The Foundry / Luxology honeymoon sale.

Quote: "We have been working with The Foundry for the last year to integrate MARI into our production pipeline. MARI 1.6 is the culmination of this work and now includes a powerful vector painting toolkit allowing us to provide our surfacing artists with an exceptional 3D paint tool. The program was possible because of the close working relationship between The Foundry and DreamWorks Animation where they listened closely to our requirements and delivered a solution that exceeded our expectations."

Andrew Pearce, Director of Research & Development, DreamWorks Animation SKG

The flowmap feature looks pretty cool!

I can think of quite a few scenarios where it would be useful...

Cool! Mari has run on AMD for a while but there were some bits that didn't pass our QA tests.

We've been working with AMD to iron out the kinks and are finally happy that 1.6 meets our (pretty high) standards.

Could the flow maps be used to spit out a per-pixel direction map to use with an anisotropic shader, like the one in Marmoset Toolbag?

I've not used marmoset but it is spitting out a per pixel direction map. Give it a go!

I own modo but would love to get a deal on Mari. It doesn't appear that there is a Mari discount related to the Luxology/Foundry honeymoon sale. Am I just missing it or more likely, out of luck?

Until December 21st, you should be able to get a Mari discount as a modo owner. Check this page: http://forums.luxology.com/topic.aspx?f=3&t=71817.

Come on Jack, spill the beans. When are the 2D image editing features coming? Some artists are getting disorientated because they have to spin around in their chairs to a workstation with Photoshop.

P.S. You can do it Jack! We would petition Boris, to have you immortalised into a stone statue.

Heh. Can't spill any beans at the moment I'm afraid. There is some fun stuff coming though.

I'd like the statue though. Maybe on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Hey Jack,

Did photoshop style layers ever show up in MARI? The last time I tried it, there was not true layer painting . I loved everything else about it, and would have bought it except for it was lacking what to me is an essential feature.

Mari workflow is essentially layered and always has been. Only real differance is that it uses a framebuffer before its baked to the layer.

Hmmmm... it was not the case when I played with it...it was channel based...but in the one channel there was no way to create layers when I tried it last.

I dont have an issue with a framebuffer painting style as some people do, I prefer it, but I want PS style layers within the channel . I am pretty sure this was the number one request for MARI when it came out. Its been a year since I last tried it, it may have changed.

Personally my advice would be don't treat Mari like Photoshop - it's not the same thing.

Mari 2.0 is the planned released for Photoshop-Style Layers.

At the moment you can replicate Photoshop layers using shader modules - just treat diffuse or masked diffuse (if you want masks) as layers and it acts very similar.

It's obviously not as simple as creating a layer and starting to paint straight away plus it can slow things down once you start to pile on the layers, but it does allow you to re-use channels to achieve different effects without having to re-duplicate layers.

Agreed. This is generally the first piece of advice I give people who want to learn Mari. It's an entirely different beast, but when you put in the time to learn it, you'll find it's even more rewarding and intuitive than Photoshop for texturing.
