Halo 4 Spartan Ops :: Production Focus

Hey there,

The Glaswegians put their heart and soul into creating the amazing realistic science-fiction scenes and faces for the Spartan Ops Halo 4 episodes. Click on the image for a read of how they did the job.

Looks excellent across the board. Good to see Axis is still pushing Houdini to the limits and beyond

I look forward to the animated episodes more than the new missions on Halo servers.

The production quality is insane for a web series... What's the budget for this ?

I'd really like to know which renderer they use. They have some very good lighting and shading recalling that of Digic's where they use Arnold.

Good series as well. I like it.

Wow, these web episodes are amazing! Kind of reminds me of Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles back in the day, but on a way more cinematic levels of course. Axis is doing some really nice work and its really nice to see Houdini being used as a complete package because I was always under the impression that it was only used for fx work. Man the rendering quality is really superb, keep em coming Axis!

Its very awesome, but in the midst of the great work i cant stop cringing and losing the immersion every time the lady doctor hair appears on screen. It seems to suffer from the same "bad 3D hair animation syndrome" typical in most mainstream cg animations from Japan, i.e. (outsourced?) where the hair just looks wrong animation-wise (too slow, low gravity) and just ruins it for me, in spite of the fantastic overall work.

I guess i'm describing a textbook case of the Uncanny Valley ?

I'd actually really like to see how they did all of the hair work. I think the hair on Laskey and Thorne look great, but I agree that Halsey stands out. The hair itself I think looks fine, it just seems really ridged.

Interesting! You obtain great results with it and it's nice to see a studio make good use of the software's native renderer. Thank you for the reply.

Of course you are.. but understandbly so! In spite the amazing work, it's obvious that this is an issue since the visual fidelity is very high. This makes it harder for the animation to be irreproachable.

The visuals done by these artists are amazing. Of course they reach the point of the uncanny valley in regards to the hair on the doctor and the occasional blurriness (to me anyway) of certain moments of lighting. Overall however this is outstanding work and the ability to overcome the uncanny valley will one day rear itself when our technology is good enough. We should enjoy the work that artists like these are creating and just flow with the experience and story they are relating to us.

however.. it made me realise how tired I'm getting of Jennifer Hale's voice acting, every other game seems to have her in it
