How to rig bent mesh legs?

Hello, so for this I have no real idea how to go about this.

I'm trying to rig this character
And as you can see his legs are quite bent and his knees point off halfway between directly opposite from each other, and parallel from each other.

When I put the IK in for the bones how they are now, the knee doesn't follow the pole vector.

Do I need to do something with the joint orientation?

Please help.
