My Character Rigging and Tools Dev Graduate Demo Reel

Hello everyone,

This is the first demo reel that I've created, demonstrating some of my rigging and scripting capabilities. Hope you enjoy it!

Wow, man. Looks great. I really like the chest/spine set up. Looks like it gives you the simplicity of just animating with the chest control unless you need to unhide the spine for fine tuning the curvature. It looks similar to Brad Noble's rig but with a couple extra features that were always on my wishlist. Nice work

Hey Andy,

Thanks for your comments. I think saying that I was "inspired" by Brad would be an understatement, I downloaded his rig and tried to deconstruct it the best I could while putting in a few extra features and I rearranged the spinner/slider controls in the modifier tab to something which I thought was more intuitive.

The spine was quite interesting though because I believe Brad's spine requires a plug-in which I think is called virtualSegment to work, whereas I got the same functionality without that.

This is my first serious full-body rig and I learnd a lot by doing it, far more than I would've if I had been taught it on a website like Digital-Tutors, but there are some problems which an Animator pointed out to me - he mentioned that the skinning near the pelvis needed work and the axis order of the FK arms needed to be changed and I agree with both of his suggestions.

Fantastic job Harry!

You implemented almost every feature a animator can wish for. I was following your WIP thread in the rigging forum and i'm glad to see you made such tremendous progress in such a short time.

Like I mentioned before, I've learned a lot from creating it. I think the next step would be trying to automate it with script but I'd like to learn Maya and try to implement it in there before I do.

I'm glad you checked out my WIP thread, I posted a lot of stuff there without any replies and I was wondering if it was worth it, but now I know it was .

I checked you WIP thread too. I'm not a max user so I hadn't much to say, but it was interesting.
I just have a question about the hand setup : the translation and the rotation are on 2 different controllers right ? And the arm rotation automatically follows the forearm ? Most animators I worked with don't really like that and prefer one single controller and a hand that doesn't follow the forearm in rotation.
I highly encourage you to automate it, either in Maya or Max. Automated rigging tools is what makes you do greater things faster.

You're right, there are separate controls for rotation and translation which is a bit odd - I think I just forgot to create a orientation constraint so that the hand rotations can blend between the translation control or the lower arm bone - still got a lot to learn .
